Suggest Remedy For Sore Throat, Cough And Loss Of Voice

I have been sick since Thursday. I have a bad sore throat, a very bad deep cough and barely a voice. I've been trying otc meds but nothing is working. I feel miserable. I don't think it's strep, had my tonsils removed over 15 years ago. Should I go to the hospital?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you are suffering from viral throat infection leading to sore throat or pharyngitis along with cough and loss of voice or Laryngitis..
In case if the cough is severe there is a possibility that it is due to bronchitis..
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and he can advise you to get investigations like Thoat swab culture, complete blood picture, sputum culture, chest x ray etc done to rule out the exact cause of the problem and treat you accordingly..
He can advise a course of antibiotics like Azithromycin or Augmentin, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, anti allergics like Levocetrizine, cough suppressant containing Guaifenesin or Dextromethorphan, warm saline gargles, steam inhalation and use a humidifier in your room..
Sip on plenty of warm water throughout the day..
Suck throat lozenges..
Avoid chilled and spicy foods..
Take a soft and semisolid diet ..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.

Hi Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...
As per your symptoms, you might have strep throat, this could also happen even after totonsillectomy ( removal of tonsils) This is infection caused by streptococcus pyogenes. You could also have a viral infection also instead of strep throat. However following remedies can be tried :-

1.Salt Water Gargle-Mix 1 tsp of salt with warm water in a glass. Gargle for roughly 15-20 seconds and spit out. You can repeat this as needed for 2-3 days. Remember to spit the water after rather swallowing it.
2. Anti-inflammatory medicines like acetaminophen/ ibuprofen may be helpful
3. Take antibiotic like Azithromycin or augmentin
4. Sucking on cough drop containing dexomorphan or even a plain sugar candy can sometimes help cough by increasing saliva production & soothing the throat.

Visit a ENT specialist, if problem persist
Hoping your query is solved
