Hi there, I am after explanation of what happens during and after a prostate biopsy. There is a bit of bleeding which I was warned about. But I like to know step by step of the procedure and how much damage is done during this procedure, if any at all? Thanks.
Prostate biopsy is done when one is suspected to have cancer of the prostate.
The procedure is done under ultrasound guide and samples of proste tissue aretaken from 12 different sites of prostate .
The patient is placed in left lateral or lithotomy position and a well lubricated finger is passed in rectum to palpate posterior surface of prostate , A specially designed biopsy needle is passed along the finger and needle is advanced under ultrasound control and prostate is punctured and biopsy is taken . This procedure is repeated to get tissue sample from various quadrants of prostate Al the bites of the tissue are sent for histopathological examination . There are chances of getting infection and bleeding from the sites of biopsy which normally gets controlled with antibiotics. Dr.Patil.
