Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I think my twelve year old daughter has Social Anxiety Disorder. She is afraid of having no friends and craves popularity. She takes everything her friends say as an insult and often creates arguments over the smallest, most insignificant things. She is always nervous when she is asked to speak to people over the phone, even when they are people she has known for many years. She never speaks up in class unless the teacher asks her to, and she never answers correctly even though she knows the right answer because she gets flustered with the attention being on her. Do you agree? Do you disagree?
Social anxiety is really distressing and result in loss of school and social performance in children. She is 12 years old and have significant social anxiety. I would suggest you to talk to her and try to enquire any distress or anxiety provoking stimulus at home or school. A lot of children with social anxiety have underlying conflict and resolving the conflict ultimately resulted in improvement of symptoms. Take her to school counsellor and she might help her in expressing her conflict.
If she doesn't improve with this then consult a psychiatrist. In children low dose anti-anxiety drugs like Fluoxetine help to improve the symptoms. The drug is an approved drug to use in children. Provide her warm support and loving care.
Thanks, hope this helps you.
