Suggest Topical Treatment For Enlarged And Inflamed Taste Buds

I was diagnosed with LPR and I have all those enlarged, inflamed taste buds on the back and on the posterior sides of the tongue. I was told to take Prilosec 20mg daily. Is there any topical treatment to lessen the discomfort? Gargle with warm salt water/peroxide?

Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

Yes, you could go for a warm saline gargles, and also some kind of anti septic gargles like a povidone iodine gargles. If I were your doctor, I would also advise you to avoid hot, spicy, and oily food specially from outside, where amebiasis is common. If need be after investigations, I would also prescribe you a course of metronidazole, which might prove helpful for your inflamed buds as well as for the regurgitation causing the inflammation. Also, I would advise you to elevate the head end of the bed with two blocks on each side, so that the regurgitation does not occur while lying down, and the contents of esophagus and stomach flow down with gravity. Also Regular routine exercises like morning walk depending on your medical fitness might do wonder in your case with reduction in weight if you are overweight. Following this, I would possibly prescribe you a prokinetic agent and a proton pump inhibitor for symptomatic relief and to have a control on the acid production and facilitate movement of gastric contents downwards.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
