HISTORY: When my grandson was 14 months old, his mother (my late daughter) became convinced that he had Asperger s Syndrome, based on his rocking behavior. He did, indeed, rock: rocked himself to sleep, sometimes rocked in sitting position so forcefully that he broke the sides of his play area. Her solution was to put his toys, including a bouncey horse, in his room and let him play up there in the mornings for up to a couple of hours. We did argue about it, as he did not get breakfast, and his diaper was thoroughly soaked and quite heavy. CURRENT: He often obtains various foods, mostly comfort foods, late at night and eats them in his room. He often gets into the same types of food during the day. He is 8 1/2 years old now; overweight by about 10-11 pounds; cannot seem to stop the behavior, although he does try. He seems to need to be the constant center of attention, even if it means negative attention. If either his aunt or I are gone from the home, generally leaving his 14-yr-old sister in charge for a short duration, his angry, anxious behaviors escalate. QUESTION: Could his behaviors be rooted in that period from 14 months to about age 2? If I wanted to look up possible treatment modalities, what would I look under? My own history is 29 years as a psychiatric RN, but in adults. I only have about 18 months in juvenile psych, during the last 4 years of practicing. He s been diagnosed by a counselor with ADHD (he is not physically hyperactive), with which I disagree but cannot seem to get her to look at other options. He also witnessed adult friends attempting CPR on his mother 4 1/2 years ago; she died following a severe seizure one night (she had epilepsy). He was present when the EMTs took his mother out of the house. For a short period, the counselor did address PTSD, but has not focused on it in the last 18 months. Thank you.
