Suggest Treatment For Kleine-Levin Syndrome

My son is seeing a sleep disorder specialist today and he has been diagnosed with Kleine-Levin Syndrome. What questions should I ask? I have heard the same old..."Wait the episode out" and feel that there must be an alternative treatment for my son.

Hello
Welcome to HCM.

The syndrome which you have mentioned is a very rare disorder. It consists of triad of increased appetite (polyphagia), increased sexuality and increased sleeping (hypersomnia). The patients sleeps for most of the time in day and night. And the times he is awake, he spends that time in eating. It is more of a neurological disorder than a psychological disorder.

Unfortunately, its difficult to treat. But i would advice you to start your son with tablet provigil 100mg in morning. This might help him to stay awake.

I would also suggest you to take a second opinion. If you are in india, please take your son to NIMHANS bengaluru. Its the best place for his treatment.

I wish for good health of your son.
Thanks.
