My 1 year old son has urine infection and bacteria is Proteus microbilis. He was given amikacin 500 injections for a week. Still he is having bacteria count of 35000/ml. Nothing was diagnosed in USG abdomen. Please suggest what should I do. How can my son get rid of this infection.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Thank you for your query.
If the infection has not subsided with the initial course of antibiotics, a urine culture & sensitivity should be obtained.
The organism may be have become resistant or a new organism may be present that's causing the infection.
After sample for the culture has been obtained, an empirical antibiotic (a different one) till the culture reports are back.
Based on the results, appropriate antibiotics can be administered till the infection has been cured.
Recurrent Infections need further evaluation to check for any anatomical causes for it. (posterior urethral valve, for instance)
Please continue to hydrate him well.
Hope this helps. Please get back to us for further clarification.
Wish you both good health
