Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I just had my first PAP test and it came back abnormal. I also have chlamydia so the nurse practitioner said that might have caused it. She said we would do another PAP test in six months and she gave me a prescription to treat the chlamydia. Isn t that too long to wait for another PAP test? I am 21 and with no history of a previous PAP test, there is no way to know how long those epithelial cells have been abnormal. They could have progressed from precancerous to cancerous already and waiting six months could mean letting cancer progress in my body for that long. Please help. What should I do?
The abnormal cells on PAP smear could be due to chlamydia infection. Your nurse is right in suggesting you to repeat PAP smear within six months. Clearing of chlamydial infection can lead to clearing of abnormal cells after six months. Take treatment of chlamydia infection and to get PAP test repeated after six months.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
