Suggest Treatment For Acute Respiratory Failure, Shock And Hyperkalemia
My Mother was recently hospitalized with AFib. She also has CHF, CAD. Recieved IV Cardizem and was noted to be hemodynamically stable. Potassium was 3.1 and she was given 80 meq. Throughout the night her condition began to deteriorate. A rapid response was initiated and she was transferred to critical care. Dr told me her potassium was dangerously high. Lab result showed that potassium was now 7. She was in Critical Care for 7 days and now has been discharged with hospice care. I am trying to piece and part together what has happened and how this all changed suddenly. Paperwork states Acute respiratory failure, shock and hyperkalemia. please help me understand. Is this all related to the Afib?
According to the diagnosis of discharge, yes, I can say that in atrial fibrillation not controlled it might happen respiratory failure and heart failure also which takes to low quantities of urine excreted from the kidneys and as a result hyperkalemia. The most important thing now is that she is stable.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Jolanda Nikolla, Pulmonologist
