Suggest Treatment For Anxiety And Obsessive Compulsive Disorder In A Child

My 15 yr.old grandson is displaying anxiety with obsessive compulsive factor...he constantly washes his hands and arms, sometimes it seems endless. My daughter, his mom, is extremely frustrated and has brought him to a professional therapist. Please, let me know if there is anything I can, as his grandmother do to help; I have had anxiety and unfortunately it runs in my family...I would appreciate your opinion.

Thank you for writing in to hcm.
it would be advisable to consult a psychiatrist and may need medications like N acetylcysteine which is relatively a better tolerated medication for obsessive compulsive disorder.

Along with this behavioural therapy may be essential for which you need to consult a psychologist.

Patient co operation is required which can be achieved by encouraging him and supporting him and explaining to him that he needs to change the behaviour for the good.
