Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mom, 86 years old, fell out of bed & again in the bathroom while trying to reach the commode because she was feeling nauseous. She seemed really bloated & hasn t been eating for 3 days. She was taken to the ER & admitted. They said she hurt her back (L1 vertabra), & was dehydrated. She was put on an. IV & they gave her morphene for her back pain. Now, they are considering back surgery by an orthopedic surgeon to fuse the L1& L2 vertebrae. Wouldn t a neurosurgeon be a better choice for the surgeon for her back surgery? Please help quickly. We need to make the best decision for my mom. Thanks.
The spine surgery is done by both neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons. There is nothing choose between the two for this kind of surgery. What is important is whether that particular neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon has enough experience in spine surgery. There are many orthopedic surgeons who specialize in and have huge experience in spine surgery. Therefore, you may check whether the orthopedic surgeon in question operates often on spine. Hope this answers your question.
