Suggest Treatment For Bipolar Disorder And Depression

My husband was just diagnosed with bipolar 2. Throughout our marriage he has had outburst for silly reasons. I always said living with him is like walking on egg shells. I never knew when he was going to blow up, or just be okay. He has had a job for 34 years but recently had a problem with a boss which through him into a major depression and now he cannot go back. He was going to retire soon anyway, so he has put his papers in for March 1, 2014, which I don't have a problem with because it is a physical job and it is killing him. I am just very confused about the diagnosis. I always thought he just had anger issues. The psychiatrist we went to was not very helpful, just gave him a paper, said answer the questions and said, "you are bipolar 2" but would not answer any questions, just put him on lamictal. Just by what I have said, does it seem to be bipolar. How do you determine just personality or bipolar? Thank you for any help.
