Suggest Treatment For Breakthrough Seizures Despite Being On Medication
My wife is taking five 500 mg keppra pills per day. She takes 2 in AM, 1 Noon, 2 PM. Prescription calls for six pills per day 2, 2, 2. She reduced to five because she has developed an itching rash condition. Prior to taking keppra she took three 100 mg dilantin per day 1, 1, 1. In addition she takes 64 mg of pheno-barb 3 x per day. Her breakthrough seizures have been less under keppra but thinks she would like to go back on dilantin and increase dosage to 200 mg 3 x per day. Any thoughts? Prior to that she was on dilantin (100 mg 3 x per day). She would still have breakthrough seizures.
General & Family Physician, Dr. Prakruthi's Response
Hi if she had breakthrough seizures on dilantin then there is really no justification to back to that drug. If keppra has prevented break through seizures it just goes on to say that her body has adapted better to Keppra. Please continue to take it. if she wants to reduce the dosage or is experiencing any unpleasant effects please talk to your doctor about it . Donot take descions of reducing or increasing dosages without consulting your doctor. It can have serious effects. I hope this helps . take care.
