Hi. I am 32 weeks pregnant and was diagnosed with bronchitis a month ago. Essentially, my sinuses were draining, caused a sinus infection and this turned into bronchitis. I was prescribed promethazine for the cough and told to get a humidifier and increase my fluid intake. I have tried Mucinex and Sudafed at the recommendation of another doctor (at an urgent care facility). Quite frankly, I am tired of treating symptoms and doing nothing to address the problem. What can or suggest to my doctor to prescribe to get rid of the infection? I have taken more than I am comfortable with to find relief from the symptoms. I pee my pants at least twice a day coughing. I am so frustrated and completely miserable like this. Please help.
If you really have a sinus infection or bronchitis, you need to be treated with antibiotics to clear it up completely. Many physicians who are not obstetricians are not comfortable prescribing antibiotics for pregnant women because they do not know which ones are safe. If you were my patient, I would treat you with azithromycin or a penicillin-based antibiotic because these are safe during pregnancy. You may want to ask your OB for advice and/or a prescription instead of a primary care doctor as they are more comfortable and familiar with antibiotic use during pregnancy. you can even have a chest x-ray safely in pregnancy if there is any doubt of your diagnosis.
All of the over the counter medications for cough, cold and sinuses (in the US) are safe to use during pregnancy and may help with your symptoms. However if you have been sick for that long I would recommend antibiotic treatment. I would discuss this with your treating doctor.
I hope this advice was helpful, good luck with your pregnancy, and I hope you feel better.
