Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve been having a lot of pain in my left hand. I can t use my thumb to squeeze and so far the pain only goes to my wrist mainly from the palm. My thumb is mainly affected. I ve suspected carpel tunnel syndrome. Both of my sons are doctors and I have a call in to one of them now. Medical care isn t the greatest where I live so I ll get their advice too, since they live elsewhere. I thought at first it was arthritis but now I m not so sure. I m 68 years old.
Hello dear Understand your concern. In carpal tunnel syndrome, there is compression of median nerve in wrist. It causes pain, tingling and numbness in the thumb, index and middle fingers. Risk factors: obesity, excessive use of thumb and wrist, hypothyroidism and rheumatoid arthritis. You should consult the orthopaedics and do necessary test to diagnose
Treatment are as follow: Physiotherapy Rest to the wrist Stop activity that use wrist and modification in acitivity Cold pad application on wrist Drugs: ibuprufen Steroids: injection at local site and orally Splinting and brace to the wrist: also wear at night time If problem is severe, not relieved by medicine and associated with muscle atrophy: surgery to release fascia help in treatment
Hope this may help you Best regards Dr. Saagar
