General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Mental illness can be a terrible burden to have. It is nice to see that you still want to help him despite all the difficulties. It does sound like he may have a mood disorder (depression and anxiety perhaps). Medications are safe and effective. The first-line treatment for severe depression in young adults would be fluoxetine (Prozac) and psychotherapy.

They can be done together and work well if used at the same time. There are many telemedicine websites that can help him if he cannot see a psychiatrist. If he is a danger to himself or a danger to others, you would need to call 911 and have him taken to the ER. If he is a serious danger, he could be evaluated by a psychiatrist at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Timothy Wong, General & Family Physician
