Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I suffered from depression since my teenage. I have become more self aware and I really want to change it. My biggest problem with my depression is irritability. I get extremely irritated and angry and then end up crying a lot. I am ok with crying and feeling sad but I feel extremely guilty and sick of showing my irritation on others. I have been on different kinds of meds including prozac, esctalopram and bupripion. I like Bupripion because of the low side effects but the irritability hasn t decreased and keeps increasing. I don t want to see a psychiatrist in India because so far I haven t seen them discuss side effects and I had to find out the hard way. Can you please suggest some medication that will decrease my irritability and not have as many side effects, especially weight gain. Thank you.
Almost all medications have a side effect profile, and anti-depressants more than most. I believe that medications alone are not adequate. Therapy sessions with psychologists do wonders. I understand that finding a good psychiatrist who you can build a connection with is difficult, but there are a few of them.
I suggest you do find a new psychiatrist at a reputed institution and outline your problems just as you have here. Tell him/her about your concerns regarding side effects and ask him for a referral to a psychologist for therapy.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan, General & Family Physician
