Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Suggest Treatment For Difficulty In Leg Movement Due To History Of Having Broken Femur Bone
My husband broke his femur bone in two places. He has had surgey and the bone has healed but his good leg muscle has withered. He has difficulty moving his good leg forward. He has had therapy for 5 months and is now on his own. He walks well with a walker but is a fall risk when he uses only a cane. Is there something other than shock (he has a pacemaker) that can be used to stimulate the muscle?
Electrical stimulation therapy may be a useful option to consider in this case. Electrical stimulation therapy involves using electrical impulses to stimulate the muscles, causing them to contract and helping to rebuild strength and reduce atrophy.
There are different types of electrical stimulation therapy that can be used, such as neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and functional electrical stimulation (FES). NMES involves placing electrodes on the skin over the targeted muscles and applying electrical impulses to stimulate them. FES involves using electrodes to stimulate nerves that control the muscles, which can help to improve movement and function.
It is important to note that electrical stimulation therapy should be performed by a qualified healthcare professional and closely monitored to ensure it is safe and effective. Your husband's healthcare provider or physical therapist may be able to provide more information and guidance on whether this therapy would be appropriate for him and how to proceed with it.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
