Suggest Treatment For Digestive Problems With Extreme Belching

I have recently had really bad digestive issues to the point that I have had to drink liquid antacid, chew tums, take gas x pills and omeprazol all in one day. I m better now but it has lasted about 1 week or so and I am still a little bit gaseous and bloated. This is the worse I ve had and it began when I ate a bowl of veggie beef soup made with tomato sauce. I had pain on the right side of my back (which I think was trapped gas) and when I belched or had a bm it relieved some of the pressure. I belched everyday all through the day for a week. I have been diagnosed with a mild case of IBS, acid reflux and hiatal hernia several years ago when I had an upper GI done. Could this be something more serious?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there

These symptoms are most likely due to IBS and acid reflux, i recommend the following:
1. Have regular healthy meals. Avoid processed foods. Sugary foods. Chocolate, coffee and cheese.
2. Increase your water intake
3.Exercise if overweight, this will help with the hernia.
4.Start taking a probiotic to help with digestion and prevent bloating.
5.Continue the omeprazole in the interim and gasex is also helpful to alleviate symptoms.

If symptoms continue and pain is localised to the right back or right abdomen, you would have to visit your doctor to do an ultrasound to rule out gallstones. this is more likely if you are a female with high cholesterol and over the age of 40.

Hope this helps.
