Suggest Treatment For Diverticulitis
I have been diagnosed with diverticulitis and have had numerous attacks in the past 2 years. I have just seen a GI MD after this last attack. The plan will be to have a colonoscopy in one month after the symptoms have ended and then consult a surgeon for a possible colon resection, also endoscopy if indicated. Is this the proper medical plan for me? Is it true that milk can irritate my disease?

Surgical therapy is indicated in all low-surgical-risk patients with complicated diverticular disease.
In patients with Diverticulitis, who are low risk (ASA/American Society of Anesthesiologists P1/A normal healthy patient and P2/A patient with mild systemic disease), surgical therapy can be offered to those who do not rapidly improve on medical therapy.
The goals of surgical management of diverticular disease include controlling sepsis, eliminating complications such as fistula or obstruction, removing the diseased colonic segment, and restoring intestinal continuity.
Your doctor is the best judge in this respect. Patients with diverticulitis should be instructed to eat a fibre-enriched diet that includes 30 g of fibre each day.
There is some anecdotal data to avoid eating nuts but no such restriction exists or is advisable regarding milk consumption.
