hi, my sister has diverticulitis and has been battling loose stools for over a week no matter if she goes on liquids or eats moderate diverticulitis diet...how can she stop the loose and runny stools and what should she eat now? My email is YYYY@YYYY
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Diverticulitis has two types of treatment: one is medical investigations and management, and two is surgery if medical management fails as there is no other management.
Since she is suffering from loose stools in spite of what she eats and drinks and diverticular diet. I would advise her following: • Get the stool test and blood counts. • Get the CT scan of the abdomen to know the exact position of the diverticular disease. • Get a long course of an antibiotic, metronidazole, and probiotics and she may be fine.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. T Chandrakant
