Suggest Treatment For Dry And Itchy Rashes On Inner Elbows

Hi....I've been frequently getting a dry and itchy rash on my inner elbows/armpits. It starts as small red spots (like measles) eventually flaking and drying up and leaving a black scar. I get quite often....I stay in Leh, Ladakh [cold desert] which is exposed to a lot of sun. However I was getting it in the peak of winter too [-20] when my hands are not really exposed to sun or heat/sweat. It is quite painful as well at times.

Hello,

You are suffering from dry, itchy rashes on the inner elbow. Do not touch, scratch or pop the area affected. Take care of your hygiene, wear soft cotton clothes and wash your clothes and bedding in hot water frequently. Take bath regularly and apply water based or herbal based body lotion to keep skin moist and to prevent it from drying.

To get rid of itching, apply ointment hydrocortisone on the area affected. Take non sedating antihistamine to control symptoms due to allergy. Avoid food that does not suit you and triggers your symptoms. If it is due to fungal infection you can take a course of antifungal medicine orally.

Medical conditions that can cause itchy rashes are eczema or atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, numular dermatitis, dematitis herpetiformis, allergic reactions, etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a dermatologist if your symptoms are not reducing and are persistent. You may need to get few skin tests, blood works done so that treatment can be started at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
