Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have an underactive thyroid - for many years I get a really dry chocking cough. I have to get water and stop talking to rest the throat. It then produces lots of mucus. This can happen at any time out the blue, never when I am eating - maybe talking or even when I am driving. I did ask my GP many years about it and he thought it was an allegy but I disagree. When I have one of these coughing fits now it is getting worse.
Understanding your concern. As per your query dry chocking cough along with lot of mucus are pointing towards condition known as severe upper respiratory tract infection. You may have lung infection or bronchitis. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist and get it examined. You should get an x ray of the chest as well. Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test or virus culture test. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics such as Penicillin at least for 10 days along with decongestants and mucolytic agents . For now do warm saline rinses , take rest. . Do warm saline gargles with pinch of salt water. Mast cell stablizers such as sodium cromoglycate is effective to prevent infection. You should avoid hot, sharp and spicy foods. .
Hope your concern has been resolved.
