Suggest Treatment For Dry Cough

My wife who is 60 plus and diabetic. She is suffering from dry cough. I tried for sugar free cough syrup which was not available and hence no medicine could be given. She has been trying home remedies but no relief. She needs to be guided if Benadryl DR could be given to her or could be advised otherwise.

The cause of cough could be from infection to allergy ......she needs to be on antibiotics with cough expectorant.sugar free a must benadryl if sugar free can be given....hot water fomentation could help.....if not relieved need to show to a doctor and get a chest xray done
