Suggest Treatment For Dry Hacking Cough Despite Medication
My mother(age 62 yrs) is suffering from dry hacking cough past 1 and half months. Coughing gets worse after sleeping both during day and night. She has tried anti-allergy medicine(cetzin-10), antibiotic(ceftum) and mucolite but all medicines are providing only partial temporary relief. Then doctor suggested Hb%, TCDC and ESR tests. Hb% - 11.9, Eosinophils - 18% and ESR - 18. Then she has been advised to take Banocide forte- twice a day for 20 days and Mondeslor- at bedtime for 20 days. After taking Banocide Forte and Mondeslor for 6 days her Eosinophils is 9%. But she is still suffering from dry hacking cough getting worse during sleep. Could you please give some advice. 1. As cough is there for > 15 days, no response to antibiotics thus this is an indication for immediate X-ray to exclude postnasal drip, reflux disease along with associated heart problem [since it increases during supine position: [heart failure, cardiac asthma, bronchitis, till then assuming a propped up [with a pillow] is an ideal position to sleep.
2. As the symptom of coughing is there for more than 3 months, and there is no relief with the conventional line of treatment thus following should be your approach:
i. Ask for investigations like Hb%, WBC for eosinophilia, X-ray chest for TB, Pneumonia. If other investigations are normal, HIV test [as routine].
