Suggest Treatment For Dull Painful Knot In Back And Chest Pain

Hi so I had this what I thought was a knot in my my back (right under right scapula) for a couple months now and the other day i don t know if I moved wrong or breathed wrong or what but something happened and a totally different pain shot up right where the knot was and ever since I cannot breathe in deep without a weird stabbing dull pain in my back. I have been resting from working out and taking it easy and heating but now now the pain has radiated to my right chest area too. I get weird pains if I move certain ways or lay certain ways and I can t breathe in deep or sneeze or anything without a sharp pain. The pain and discomfort increases while laying supine. Almost as if a large dull tube is trying to protrude from my chest when I breathe laying down. It s hard to explaine. I also get weird feelings/pain in my side occasionally as well. I am a 21 year old female, any thoughts? Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are experiencing pain at the back and chest. It is a weird stabbing pain. When you change position you can't breath due to hurt and it also hurts when you sneeze or cough. Your symptoms are indicative of costochondritis, a benign inflammation of the upper costochondral and sternocostal joints, may radiate down the scapula. You can take naproxen or Combiflam, one SOS when pain. You can also apply pain relieving sprays and ointments. Gentle massage may help. Get connected to a physical therapist, stretch exercises, walking and massage will help you get better.

Other medical factors that may cause similar symptoms are nerve impingement, stress- strain of the muscles / nerves during exercise or lifting heavy weight. However, you are suggested to get clinically examined by an Orthopedics, get imaging tests done to detect fracture, tendon /ligament tear or nerve entrapment or any other pathology causing you symptoms. You will be treated accordingly. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
