Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
can you have edema with gout. I have a kidney issue and take allopurinol to prevent gout. I had a period of two months while traveling overseas that I was unable to get the allopurinol. I recognized the gout in my ankle as soon as it came but I have never had any significant amount of edema. Thoughts?
Dear sir Went through your history as you have mentioned in your history that you are suffering from gout and stopped taking allopurinol, your uric acid level has possibly gone up which has caused acute attack, generally gout does not cause generalised swelling it causes swelling of only affected joint, you need to take prednisone 20 mg once daily for five days as you have mentioned that you have kidney problem also you can not take NSAIDS or Chalichicine so avoid them and start allopurinol once symptoms subside and inform me regarding your kidney function test.
