General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Elephantiasis is caused by parasitic worms. It is transmitted from infected person through mosquito bites. She should maintain good hygiene, take bath regularly. She should wear cotton clothes that ae loose fitting. She should get connected to a physical therapist. She needs to do exercises and walking to improve lymphatic drainage.

She should keep her affected area elevated to reduce swelling and prevent infection. She should get the wounds cleaned and antiseptic dressing done. It should be cleaned, and antiseptic dressing done every alternate day.

Get her clinically examined by a GP, she will be treated with medicines that will kill the worms like ivermectin, albendazole and DEC, diethylcarbamazine. Surgery may be recommended in chronic cases that do not respond to conservative treatment being given. Surgery helps to reconstruct or remove the affected tissues or lymph.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
