Suggest Treatment For Enlarged Goiter

Hi I am 20 years of age, I have been experiencing irregular menstrual cycles since I was 15, about a year ago I began to experience persistent sexual arousal (which I did not disclose with my doctor). My doctor a few years ago mentioned I might have polycystic ovarian syndrome but I never got a followup. She did however signal out that I had an enlarged goiter and I also told her I had experienced a significant amount of weight gain upon coming to college, evident because of an increased proliferation of red stretch marks in my inner thighs and butt area. My doctor also said that my prolactin levels were very high for my age. If you have any suggestions or can diagnose my symptoms please let me now as soon as possible. I come from a family with lung, esophageal and breast cancer.

Hello,
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
Your problems are
1. Weight gain
2. Irregular menstrual cycles
3. Enlarged thyroid gland
4. High prolactin levels.

High prolactin levels could be due to either hypothyroidism ( enlarged throid glands) or Poly cystic ovarian disease.
But prolactin level may also be little bit elevated in stressful conditions.
Weight gain also could be either due to Polycystic ovarian disease or hypothyroidism.

To confirm the diagnosis, requires further tests and observation.
1. Complete thyroid hormone profile
2. Prolactin levels in blood
3. Ultrasound abdomen and pelvis
4. Blood sugar fasting and postprandial
5. Liver function tests.
Depending on what is found to be the cause, the treatment varies.
For example, if these symptoms are due to hypothyroidism, then supplement of thyroxine hormone will be the usual treatment.

Hope this helps.
Please write back for further queries.
Wishing you good health.

Thanks for query.all the symptoms you mentioned like weight gain ,goiter, irregular periods are typical symptoms of hypothyroidism.TSH and Prolactin levels go hand in hand.(hypothyroidism causes an elevation of TRH, which can cause an elevation of prolactin along with TSH).it is highly advisable to check your thyroid profile (T3,T4,&TSH) andyour doc will start appropriate dose of thyroxine .regards
