Hello:
Your wife is having
focal seizures with secondary generalization. She needs pharmacological treatment to control the seizures and diminish the risk of complications. It can be done with drugs as
carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, topiramate, clonazepam, levetiracetam, or even with more than one drug. Pharmacological treatment needs to be at least 5 years, depending on the cause of the epilepsy. If she lasts 10 years without seizures (the last 5 without taking any medication), we may consider her epilepsy resolved.
By now, try to avoid
sleep deprivation, fasting, flashing lights, alcohol and if possible, stressful situations.
By the symptoms you are describing, the seizures can have a temporal lobe origin. I suggest consulting with a
neurologist for a complete assessment, focusing in Mesial Temporal Sclerosis, as it can be cause and consequence of epilepsy, and can play an important role in
refractory epilepsy. Maybe she will need a new MRI and a new electroencephalogram.
I hope this helps. If you have any doubt before your appointment, please let me know.
