Good evening. My mother, who is 74 years old, has a problem in her chest. Her symptoms are: She feels she has phlegm in her lungs, and has to try to push it out at times, but nothing comes out. This will occur to her for several weeks at a time, with several weeks of being ok and then the cycle begins again. She wants to know what remedies can she use naturally.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Dear

Greetings

It seems your mother has some chronic lung disease we have to find out what exactly it is.

A good PFT(Pulmonary function test) and a chest x-ray may able to help in the diagnosis.

There are multiple methods which can help her to expectorate better.

Cough supressant with bronchodilator(Bromohexine)
OR
Incentive spirometery as per tolerated.

avoid cold and dust as these could be the trigger for allergic cough.

Hope this will help.
