Suggest Treatment For Fluid Retention In Legs When Suffering From Pitting Edema

My husband has 3+ pitting edema in both legs, worse on the right side. It starts just below his knees and goes down into his feet. This is a new issue and started about a week and a half ago. What can we do to get rid of the excess fluid and what could be the cause of acute onset pitting edema?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello.
Elevating the legs may help some with the edema, but he needs to see a doctor about this since it may be an indication of congestive heart failure, a liver or kidney problem, or a deep venous thrombosis--a clot in a large leg vein
