Suggest Treatment For Gastritis And Acid Reflux

I recently went to the emergency room and because ive been throwing everything up, i had my blood tested and urine tested. The doctor said the tests came back negative and that its proabably just gastritis or acid reflux, she proscribed me famotidone. She said take one tablet 2 times a day. The famotidone has been working but just recently it gave me a black tarry stool. Should i stop taking it?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms are nonspecific, but these may be suggestive of gastritis, GERD or hiatal hernia so you should do gastroscopy to evaluate it more accurately.

This is caused by irritation of stomach mucosa by certain food or medications, stress, and smoking.

It should be treated by changing lifestyle habits first and in severe cases, medications or surgery may be required.

You need to eat smaller meals but or frequently, avoid long sitting after a meal and regulate your body mass.

You need to avoid fried food, carbonated drinks, coffee, alcohol and spicy food. You should eat more milk products, vegetables and boiled food.

Also, certain antiacid medications may be required by diagnosis should be established first.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
