Suggest Treatment For Gout Flare Up

My husband is having a Gout flare up in his big toe. Should he be taking any antiinflamatory meds. I ve elevated his foot and applied an ice pack. Is there anything else we can do? We do have to make some dietary changes and I have heard of a drug called Uricel. Should we try that? Thank you Pam

Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern for your beloved husband.

Incomplete data like age, duration of the problem, any history of alcohol or medications intake, or any associated disease.

I have gone through the problem given in your query. I would suggest the following for the immediate relief of pain and joint swelling:

1. A Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or indomethacin should be given

If the pain and swelling do not subside, then he should be evaluated by a doctor for possible use of
2. Oral Colchicine which helps reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation. or
3. Corticosteroids (such as prednisone) can also be very effective

The pain often goes away within 12 hours of starting treatment. Most of the time all pain is gone within 48 hours.
After the flare up is controlled, his doctor may prescribe medicines to take daily (such as Allopurinol or Probenecid) to decrease uric acid levels in his blood. He may need these medicines if:

He has several attacks during the same year or attacks are quite severe.
He has damaged joints
He has tophi (collection of uric acid crystals in the joints or tissues)
He has kidney disease or uric acid kidney stones.

Besides, he needs certain lifestyle changes which may help prevent gout flare up like he should

Decrease or avoid taking alcohol, especially beer
Lose weight.
Exercise daily.
Limit the intake of red meat and sugary beverages.
Choose healthy foods such as dairy products, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fruits (less sugary ones), and whole grains.
Drink coffee and take vitamin C supplements (may help some people).

Uricel is a liquid herbal remedy made of natural plant extracts & is claimed to support healthy uric acid levels, while reducing pain and inflammation in joints. However, its efficacy and safety in the treatment of gout has not been proved on large clinical trials hence it is not approved by FDA. Therefore, it is best to be avoided.

Hope this answers your query.
Wishing your husband a quick and smooth recovery.

A feed back is appreciated.
