my 10 year old son woke up this morning with headache. I gave him some motrin. At 12:15 p.m. today he said he was cold i check for a fever it was 99.2. I gave him some motrin. at 1:45 it went up to 101.4. I gave him some gatorade and a cold towel on his head. At 2:45 it was 102.6. instead of going down it s climbing. I called his doctor and she s out. i left a message. I don t know what to do in the mean time. Allison- mom
A sudden onset of high grade fever and headache in an otherwise normal child usually suggest a viral illness. No need to worry much if he is otherwise okay. Just continue Motrin every 8 hours, apply cold towel if temperature not coming down. If still not coming down, additionally you can give Acetaminophen, up to 3 times daily along with Motrin. He should be okay in 2-3 days; if not, or if he develops fresh symptoms, kindly take him to your doctor.

Hi, A sudden onset of high grade fever and headache in an otherwise normal child usually suggest a viral illness. No need to worry much if he is otherwise okay. Just continue Motrin every 8 hours, apply cold towel if temperature not coming down. If still not coming down, additionally you can give Acetaminophen, up to 3 times daily along with Motrin.
