Hi,
The nodules on parathyroid glands are usually
adenoma, which are non-cancerous. However, these nodule may cause symptoms of
hyperparathyroidism leading to elevated calcium level with all its consequences. If the calcium levels are up to 12 mg/dl, then no treatment is required except for periodic observations of symptoms and calcium levels.
If the calcium levels are between 12-14 mg/dl and if there is no symptom or very mild symptoms, the surgery can be avoided, till presence of symptoms or level increases beyond 14 mg/dl. However, if the levels of calcium are >14 mg/dl, then surgery should be done, even in absence of symptoms. Above, are the consensus for management of parathyroid nodules with presence of
hypercalcemia and in my opinion, you also need to be managed accordingly.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
