Suggest Treatment For Hip Arthritis

I have arthritis in both my hips, the right one worse then the left. I am a waitress and have been working alot of extra hours. my right leg started hurting more than normal a couple of days ago and I noticed yesterday that is was swollen, my ankle, foot, calf, knee and thigh. I elevated it overnight and it looked a little better in the morning. I came home from work at the swelling was worse, so I elevated it again, and the swelling is not getting any better, and the pain in my hip is excruciating. i am already on pain medication and it is not helping. I don t know what else to do, can the arthritis cause the whole leg to swell?

Hi,

I read your problem. Hip arthritis is a injury or inflammation to a joint causes breaking down of cartilage of your hip joint, which leads to pain and stiffness over there. But the swelling of knee, calf, ankle may be many causes like edema, trauma, deep vein thrombosis, cellulitis, allergic reaction, congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, rheumatic arthritis, filaria, congenital malformation, nephrotic syndrome, hypoproteinaemia, malnutrition, fluid overload, anaemia, hypothyroidism, obstructive sleep apnea, idiopathic conditions, steroidal medicines, fracture, liver failure, and leg infection.

I don't think the whole lower extremity is swollen due to hip arthritis. But for the prevention of swelling you don't stand for long periods of time. Sit with your feet raised. Keep a regular exercise, take rest, take ice therapy, use support stockings, and lose your weight.

Raise your leg above your heart. For the pain management you can take Ibuprofen, Naproxen, and Acetaminophen, and injection of hyaluronic acid and steroid injection.

Physical therapy: isometric hip exercises, stretching, yoga swimming, take walking aids to reduce the pressure over hip joint. Get some tests include blood tests, an x-ray, an ECG, and urinalysis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ankur
