Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my mother had a fall last week and fractured her hip. she's 85 yrs old and has high BP, heart condition. The doctors are worried about her health and so are we. We think surgery would be too risky at her age and condition. What can we do? Will the fracture heal on its own? She can't bear weight on her left leg and uses a walker to move around.
Hi, IF the patient is declared fit for surgery by the cardiologist and physician , then hemiarthroplasy ( for fracture of neck of femury ) is the best option as we can immediately mobilize the patient. If she is not fit for surgery the only option is to immobilize her for about 3 weeks (during which she has to constantly change her position in bed to prevent bed sores ).After about 3 weeks , she can move around with walker as she is doing now.(# neck of femur is known for high rates of NON UNION )
