Suggest Treatment For Imbalanced Hearing After An Injury

Hi doc, someone slapped me on my left ear a week ago. i went to the clinic after realizing an imbalanced hearing and was prescribed an ear drop and some antibiotics. what worries me the most is that i can compress air in the mouth and blow through the ear with a hissing sound. is it normal?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
The problems that could have occurred with trauma are
1.injury to external auditory canal
2.rupture of tympanic membrane
3.reffered pain in the ear due to swelling in the temporomandibular joint
Of this, the first two may present with bleeding from the ear.
Small injuries in the external auditory canal will heal by itself.
Tympanic membrane tears are more serious and need careful attention. There may be sudden depreciation in hearing which feels like a block. Most of the perforations will heal by itself but it can result in permanent perforation under following circumstances
a.water enters ear during the healing stage
b.upper respiratory infection
You said you could hear some air escape through the ear, which could be due the perforation.
Usually, a 6 months time is allowed for self healing. Avoid things that could impair healing as I said before.
Treat upper respiratory infections early. Ear drops need not be instilled unless you have an ear infection.
If there is frank ear discharge or hearing loss consult a specialist.
