Suggest Treatment For Knee Pain Due To Patellofemoral Joint Space Narrowing

Had an mri which showed early mucoid degeneration on the posterior horn of medial meniscus but no descrete tear and small joint space effusion and mild patellofemoral joint space narrowing latterally of my left knee. Thing is i also have pain on my lateral side of my left knee too which couldn t be explained from the mri, it could be from somewhere else i don t know but I have had a tight IT band and I also have mild patellar bursitis. I,ve had pain now for over a year, and the pattern is very unusual, sometimes I get pain when I,m just walking or even lying down and very rarely I would have training and no pain but it would usually appear after. Ive had physio which was focused on my tight IT band and a steroid injection into knee to see its affect after a month, it helped a little but it went back to what it was before. Im wondering what the next step in treatment would be? im 15, female, plays soccer, hockey, boxing.

Hello,

Now since you have tried all, let me put in this way which can make a better understanding.

As you have this patellofemoral syndrome along with knee joint space narrowing and later side pain, due to all this there will be changes in the biomechanics of the joints for lower limbs as well the spine.

Need a proper examination and correction of the muscular Imbalance would provide efficient results.

Since you are a sports candidate, testing you with basic exercise prescription might not work great, so we need to look with a different angle for the sports Rehabilitation.

I can figure out some of the possible causes you are having with -

Patello-femoral syndrome, Reduce joint space, Pain in the lateral aspect of knee joint (lateral collateral ligament sprain), Meniscus tear.

So what I analyze is, pain is not reducing due to certain factors -

Change in the biomechanics of the knee, hip, ankle and spine joints. Looking forward to the sports Rehabilitation program should go step by step.

Strengthening the core muscles first:

Using the knee braces, Hip muscles and the lower limb muscles strengthening, IT band stretching, VMO exercise, Balance board training.

If followed with low to high intensity should provide good results. In case you have any other doubts please feel free to ask me.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
