Hello, and I hope I can answer your question.

Your low heart rate is not a risk for the baby. As long as the baby's heart rate is normal, it will get enough oxygen and be fine. Low blood pressure for the mother is also normal during pregnancy is normal and not a reason to worry.

But my main concern is your low heart rate itself and the fact that you are getting heart palpitations. Low heart rate can be normal and healthy in young or very athletic people but there are heart conditions that can lead to an abnormal heart rate as well that can be very serious. I have had women in my practice who had heart attacks while pregnant, even under the age of 40. Abnormal rhythms of the heart, called arrythmias, can also present in pregnancy and some are riskier than others. Diseases of the heart valves can present in pregnancy as well.

For that reason, I strongly encourage you to just make sure your heart is OK. If you were my patient I would recommend an EKG (electrocardiogram) and an echocardiogram and a referral to a cardiologist. All these tests are safe during pregnancy and would give you an accurate reason why you feel palpitations and your heart rate is so slow. Labor is a big stress on the heart and I feel it is important for you to discuss this with your OB provider and hopefully you will be able to get your heart evaluated to make sure everything is safe and OK for your own health.

I hope this information was helpful and that you are able to follow my recommendation and make sure your heart is ok.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
