Suggest Treatment For Nausea And Regurgitation Of Bile In Throat

Last night I woke up to this awful bubbling, nauseous feeling which has been causing me to burp slightly every so often. It feels as if I can feel bile in the base of my throat and it comes up every now and then when I do burp. I took a heartburn tablet just to see if what symptoms I ve been displaying were related to that. I took the tablet about an hour ago but it hasn t seemed to work, I m young so I do not suffer from serious or intense indigestion but I am not feeling well at all and I would like to know what I can do to stop this nauseous feeling. Thank you.

Hi ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

Possibly you have got some kind of regurgitation of your acidic stomach contents into your throat due to a possible GERD (gastro esophageal regurgitation disease).

If I were your doctor, I would advise you for the following:

1) Elevate the head end of the bed with two blocks on each side, so that the regurgitation does not occur while lying down, and the contents of esophagus and stomach flow down with gravity.
2) Some modification in your diet like more of roughage, enough liquids, avoidance of oily, fried, and fast food
3) Regular routine exercises like morning walk depending on your medical fitness.
4) Prescription for a prokinetic agent and a proton pump inhibitor for symptomatic relief and to have a control on the acid production and facilitate movement of gastric contents downwards.

The above noted steps would hopefully relieve you of your symptoms. If not, then I would refer you to a gastro enterologist for a possible endoscopic evaluation of your GI tract.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
