Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My enquiry concerns my mother-in-law. She is 75 and has for the past 4-5 years been troubled by osteoporosis, specifically, the vertebrae at the top of her spine/neck are crumbling and she is often in very significant pain. She obtains relief by sitting, and now by (reluctantly) taking pain killers. Her condition has deteriorated rapidly over the past year; she is now badly stooped at the neck, whereby she is almost looking at the ground when walking. What can be done to help her?
Hi, Osteoporosis is a disesease characterized by low bone mass, leading to bone fragility and suspectibility to fractures. Vertebrae is one of the commonest to get fractures in females. With the symptoms at present, she is a at a higher risk of complications and requires urgent treatment She can be started on Biphosphonate group of drugs like aldendronate along with hormonal therapy. It should help improve her bone mineral density and therefore most of her symptoms. You can get prescription medication for this from your doctor. Bone mineral density can be done now and after two years to check for treatment. Along with it, improved nutritious diet, physical exercise and supplement calcium and vit D is essential.
