I recently had a CT scan tht showed extra cartlage from my sternum to my rib because oF pain and popping sound i went to the doctors. I was told only surgery would take the pain away and to take advil and heat or ice. Thats it! It hurts all the time and is getting worse?
Rib pain must be due to reasons like costochondritis. He need proper evaluation by orthopedician.
NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)should be given to him. Local anesthetic and steroid injection can be given in the tender area if normal activities become very painful and the pain does not respond to drugs.
Infectious (bacterial or fungal) costochondritis should be treated initially with intravenous antibiotics. Surgical removal of the sore cartilage may be required if there is no response to medical therapy for costochondritis. Hope I have answered your question.
