Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello doctor, My brother is 31 years old. About 12 years ago he was diagnosed with Neurofibroma as was coveyed to us by many doctors. Over time they increased in size and number and he had to extract about 11 such lumps which were causing pain and discomfort. Now, the biopsy report says these are lipoma. So are lipoma and neurofibroma different disease? Any cure or treatment available? Please suggest our next move. Thanks Gitanjali Biswas.
A lipoma is a benign tumor of fat cells. It grows under the skin in the subcutaneous tissue which contains many fat cells. It is slow growing and may occur singly or in multiple numbers. Lipoma usually causes no symptoms. Most lipomas require no treatment. Surgical excision is done for large lipoma and for cosmetic purpose. Cure is possible by surgical excision on individual tumor. Neurofibroma is a tumor of nerve. It may be single or numerous. It is also treated by surgical excision. When it occurs in large numbers it is called neurofibromatosis. It is mostly genetic disorders. Neurofibromatosis is not curable as it is not possible to remove large number of tumors. Surgery is recommended to remove the tumors, but tmours keep on developing after removal. As there is a discrepancy in biopsy report, I suggest you for re-biopsy & histo-pathological examination in a different reputed pathological laboratory. Remember, lipoma is curable by surgical excision but neurofibromatosis is not curable. Thanks
