General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the painful lump on the ankle after injury indicates hematoma most likely. My guidelines at present:
- Local application of heating pad 5 minutes each 3 times a day
- Keep the leg elevated over support of 3-4 pillows
- Avoid weight baring till possible
- Prescription of antibiotics as cephalosporin (500 mg) or others anti-inflammatory medicines as Diclofenac, proteolytic enzymes such as serratiopeptidase
- Control of blood sugar

Some number of cases who do not respond to medical conservative therapy do require incision and drainage (minor surgery) procedure on day care basis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
