Suggest Treatment For Painful Swelling In The Feet While Having Gout

My 65 yr. old sister is having a severe gout attack this weekend. Started with the side of her left foot on Sat. a.m., and by Sun. at 3;00 a.m. both her feet were terribly swollen and she was in so much pain she couldn t even walk to the bathroom. My other sister had to bring a wheel chair for her. she s already on allopurinol for the problem she has had with her right foot. How can we help her with the pain?

Good afternoon. Thanks for the query. I am sorry for your sister condition.
Your sister is having gouty arthritis. She is already on allupurinol.
I would suggest her
1) Use cold compresses to ease joint pain.
2) Take Non-Steroidal antiinflammatory medicine, like Diclofenac sodium 2 times a day. It will help to reduce inflammation.
3) Colchicine can be given in acute attack of gout but I would like to know about her kidney function before starting it.
4) Avoid fatty food, meat, seafood, beer as it is rich purines. It will aggravate the attack.
5) Drink plenty of water. Keep her hydrated.
6) Give rest to the joint.
In case these measures are not helpful, kindly consult doctor to be examined and further investigated.
