My name is Laura and I am 19 year old, 5ft3in and i weight 8st 6lb. I have been working with horses for 5 years and began riding at the age of 3 the last 3 months i have been having very bad pain in my big toe joint and sometimes cant move it when im working (Riding), Then at the beginning of August 2011 i came of one of the horses at work and its court my foot right on my big toe joint . I have had it x rayed and nothing is broken but since the accident i have lost all the movement in my big toe and cant walk i have to walk on the side of my foot i have been walking in a moon boot with a rocker bottom sole as i find it a bit more comfortable, i can move all the rest of my toes but when i try to move it upward and downward with my hand it is so painful, what could it be and what can i do i am in the middle of phyiso at the minute and it is making no different what are my other options as my career is important to me ( Could it be Hallux Rigidus) Thanks
Since you've mentioned that the X-rays were reported to be normal and there was a crushing injury by a horse, I would imagine the condition to be a contusion of the big toe. However a painful big toe especially with a swelling and restriction of movement also need to be evaluated for hyperuricemia / gout. Chances are the physio must improve the symptoms in about 6 weeks and it's unlikely to be hallux rigidus.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
