Suggest Treatment For Pulmonary Embolism Following Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction
Dear Doctor,
My son was operated for Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction right knee using quadrupled hamstring using Biotransfix System. He has been experiencing palpitations, feeling of heart pounding fast, dizziness , short of breath associated with palpitations and a feeling of chest pressure. He is also having a low grade fever. His BP is 90/60 and his pulse rate is 113. The doctor has suspected Pulmonary Embolism. Kindly let me know what immediate action has to be taken and what are the risk factors he is facing.. I am eagerly waiting for your reply. Pl. oblige and cooperate.
I'm sorry to hear of your son's health troubles. Pulmonary embolism is a clot in the arteries within the lungs. These are most commonly detected by specific type of CT scan (CT pulmonary angiogram). If he does in fact have blood clots, then he may need blood thinning medications (anticoagulants) to prevent further clots from forming. Often after a surgical procedure, this would be indicated for 3 months. The surgeon will also have to weigh in on the decision to start blood thinners, because blood thinners will increase his bleeding risk.
I hope this clarifies your concerns. Thank you for the query.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Rimoun Hakim, Internal Medicine Specialist
