I have had perichondritis for about 5 weeks. I have been getting it frequently past 3 years. Lots of ibuprofen usually helps but not this time. No trauma or injury. Unexplained by many drs. They put me on antibiotics when I first started getting it but never worked. Usually goes away in few weeks. This time it s not. And now have tender bumps behind ear and jaw

Hi,

Noted your history about recurrent perichondritis with bumps behind the ears, taken lots of Ibuprofen without any history of trauma, seen by many Doctors, given antibiotics goes away in a few days, there are tender bumps.
First of all, you have to get a proper diagnosis as your problem is recurrent and perichondritis once occur is usually permanent.
I would advise you the following in such a situation
Consult an ENT Surgeon for a proper clinical examination and evaluation.
Relevant investigations may be needed.
Biopsy or FNAC of one of the nodule will give a proper diagnosis so that a proper management can be done.
If this is perichondritis then excision does not help always as the chances of recurrence are too much.
Oral or Injection of steroids locally help in most of the cases.
Do not fondle the area as inflammation increases.
Avoid anything that you might have found t increase the problem.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
